Before even applying, Ayscue attended a Gender, Sexuality, and Women鈥檚 Studies (GSWS) Zine launch party on campus. 鈥淭he community was beautiful,鈥 he recalls. Already immersed in creative and activist spaces as a Black Indigenous, 2-Spirit, transgender, intersex, disabled, spoken word poet, singer and community organizer, he was drawn not only to what students were learning, but how they expressed it.

That connection shaped his academic path. As a GSWS major and participant in the Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) summer field school, Ayscue built an experience rooted in both intellectual exploration and lived identity. Midway through his time at Montclair, an email about the NAIS field school sparked something deeper. 鈥淎t the time, I didn鈥檛 know there was a NAIS program,鈥 he says鈥攂ut once accepted, the experience became transformative.

鈥淭he summer field school program changed my life,鈥 Ayscue shares. Through it, he reconnected with relatives from the Ramapough Munsee Lenape Nation, relationships impacted by generations of enslavement and displacement. 鈥淓veryone in the field school was hungered for truth and justice, loving, genuine, passionate, and excited to work together.鈥

In the classroom, that same sense of depth and connection carried through. Courses like with Dr. Monica Taylor gave him space to explore anti-colonial care work across his identities, while also learning alongside peers. 鈥淏oth GSWS and NAIS communities went above and beyond the ordinary classroom structure,鈥 he says. 鈥淭hey allowed us to be human.鈥

That emphasis on humanity鈥攐n learning as something embodied, communal and deeply personal鈥攂ecame central to Ayscue鈥檚 academic and creative work. Faculty mentors like Taylor and Dr. Mark Clatterbuck helped shape that journey, grounding his work in intersectionality while fostering space for both joy and grief. 鈥淭hey know what it means to both build community and be active participants within it,鈥 he says.

Outside the classroom, Ayscue extended that commitment through leadership roles as a GSWS Head Intern and NAIS Club event coordinator. Still, he points back to the field school as the experience he鈥檚 most proud of, alongside his research on anti-colonial care work.

As he looks ahead to pursuing a Master of Divinity at Union Theological Seminary, Ayscue remains focused on continuing that work鈥攃entering embodied theology, radical access and collective liberation.

His understanding of success is still evolving. 鈥淚鈥檓 still finding what success means outside of capitalistic expectations,鈥 he reflects. 鈥淚 just want to do what I love. And do it well.鈥

For students following a similar path, his message is direct and deeply personal: trust your own knowledge. 鈥淒o not put your own intelligence into question,鈥 he says. 鈥淵our wisdom is valuable. Stay curious. And keep learning.鈥

This story is part of a series celebrating College of Humanities and Social Sciences Graduates.

Celebrating the CHSS Class of 2020! /chss/2020/06/05/celebrating-the-chss-class-of-2020/ /chss/2020/06/05/celebrating-the-chss-class-of-2020/#respond Fri, 05 Jun 2020 15:37:11 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/chss/?p=207821

We congratulate the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Class of 2020 for earning their degrees. While we wish we could celebrate together in person, we are proud of our graduates and want to mark their achievements.

In a message to CHSS graduates, Dean Peter Kingstone said, “Reaching this point with your degree in hand 鈥 especially in the midst of a pandemic and lockdown 鈥 is a great testament to your will, perseverance and talent. We are so proud of you and your achievements at 精品成人福利在线.”

Several CHSS departments found creative ways to celebrate their graduates in lieu of our traditional Convocation ceremony. See how they celebrated below!

Communication Sciences and Disorders

On May 19, the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department held a Zoom ceremony to congratulate twelve students receiving their Doctorate in Audiology,听 AuD. Friends and family of the graduates and other faculty and staff were in attendance to celebrate the graduates.听 A surprise guest speaker, Dr. Maged Haimed, gave students an inspirational message.听 Dr. Haimed is the Accounts Manager for the Mid-Atlantic division of Oticon, one of the largest hearing aid manufacturers in the world. Following the message from Dr. Haimed, each student was honored and the ceremony concluded with a toast.

English

On Thursday, May 28, the English Department celebrated its 2020 graduates with a Convocation zoomed to 160 B.A. and M.A. recipients, their proud families and friends, and their equally proud professors. Honors awardees were recognized by cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude designations, as were our annual English Department Awards recipients from 2019 and 2020. Professor Jonathan Greenberg, Department Chair, offered an inspiring and witty introduction; and Nelson Vazquez and Sierra Javras delivered moving tributes to their classmates and grateful professors; copies of all three and the event program are attached, as is a link to the video portion of the ceremony. Watch the English Department Zoom celebration and read more!

Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies

Dr. Jessica Restaino read the names of the 2020 GSWS graduating class and shared a message to the graduates. Watch the Video

Sociology

Faculty members of the Sociology department gathered via Zoom to deliver congratulations to their students. Watch the video and be sure to stay to the end for the outtakes!

A Message from President Cole

As President Susan A. Cole has told our grads, 鈥淣ow more than ever the world needs bright, committed, well-prepared people who can take on the immense challenges we are facing. Your education at 精品成人福利在线 has prepared you for this moment, and I have full confidence in you.鈥

鈥淵ou are readier than ever to go out and be great in this world鈥.,鈥 Cole said. 鈥淭he world will open up again. It will. And you will be out there able to fulfill your dreams and your hopes. That will happen.鈥

View the video below from the president, the dean of students, the provost and the president of the Student Government Association, addressed for the graduates on behalf of the entire faculty and staff and fellow students.
