Instructors should evaluate course content and pedagogy for variety in viewpoint, population focus, and author\/creator identity<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"prpl-row\"><br \/>\n<div class=\"prpl-column one-half\"><br \/>\n<iframe title=\"Video: OFE Presents: Yanick Joseph on Diversity and Inclusion in Nursing\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cUecEG5iJro?feature=oembed\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen style=\"width: 500px; height: 281px; border: 0px solid #000;\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<\/div><br \/>\n<div class=\"prpl-column one-half\">Professor Yanick Joseph offers some strategies she uses to incorporate diversity in her nursing classes. <\/div><\/div><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Strategies<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Audit course content<\/strong> for:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Diversity and inclusion of authors and creators in readings and other course materials<\/strong>, noting gaps and areas of concentration. Remain open to changing the texts and materials you assign and the voices you highlight.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diversity and inclusiveness of topics, examples, viewpoints, and experiences<\/strong> beyond reading lists: for example, include diverse examples and perspectives in lecture examples, slide decks, and case studies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tokenism<\/strong> in readings and examples: diverse materials should have relevance to your course and not serve as token representatives of particular groups or cultures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Acknowledge how power and privilege have functioned historically and today when introducing content.<\/li>\n<li>Use intentional course design to interrogate historical and contemporary consciousness and assumptions.<\/li>\n<li>Critically evaluate texts for assumptions, stereotyping, and missing perspectives and bring these elements to students\u2019 attention.<\/li>\n<li>Highlight contributions made by voices that the discipline may have under-represented historically.<\/li>\n<li>Invite guest speakers with diverse experiences and differing backgrounds.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid assuming familiarity with cultural references (for example, WASP or old American TV shows like <em>Lassie<\/em>), understanding that few cultural references are widely shared, and that assuming shared references undermines the confidence of those who do not grasp the reference.<\/li>\n<li>Offer students choices of resources so that they can work with those that they find most relevant to them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s important not only to include diverse content but also to make students aware of that diversity. Talk with students about some of the choices you made and your rationale.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Discuss the implications of any gaps or scarcity<\/strong> of diverse perspectives in your field in class.<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/poorvucenter.yale.edu\/DiversityStatements\" target=\"_blank\">Consider adding a values statement to your syllabus<\/a>, explicitly conveying the message that you welcome varied perspectives and viewpoints.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make the authors and creators on your syllabus visible to students.<\/strong> Incorporate pictures of authors or creators of materials on your syllabus, course schedule, or lectures, or try a visualization tool like a StoryMap.
