After a year of workshops, internships and shows in Sicily that have contributed to build a veritable cultural bridge between the Valley of the Temples and New Jersey, the Greek gods now also speak English! Their first American appearance was offered by an ensemble of talented Musical Theatre and Voice students of our campus, thanks to the impressive translation of one of the 2025 interns, Brianna Coppolino. A truly magical evening that gave the audience moments of introspection and emotion as they listened to the gods interrogating human beings about each others’ fate, with both humor and depth.

Video by Colin Keys

The musical, vocal and choral direction was entrusted to David Fraley of the Cali School of Music, joined by Marco Savatteri as visiting director. In five intense days of workshops, Savatteri guided a cast of sixteen students in understanding and interpreting the roles of classical myth, demonstrating how ancient themes can still be close to the sensitivity of generation Z. The cast included:Grant Anderson (Poseidon), Eoin Betancourt (Dionysus), Elizabeth Caldon (Echo), Brianna Coppolino (Trojan mother, Hera), DJ DeJesus (Faun, Perseus), Zack Dooley (Orpheus), Madison Fair (Cassandra), Mia Grizzuti (Anake), Noelle Hammond (Bacchante), Lorenzo Hilliard (Narcissus, Apollo), Elizabeth Johnson (Aphrodite, Medusa), Jaxson Louhisdon (Hephaestus), Esther Olmo (Demeter), Desirae Powell (Athena), Diogo Ramirez (Ares), Tishaun Turner (Hermes).

led the workshop with his assistant Toti Maria Geraci, who wondrously turned into a white faun just moments before the show, and started hopping on and off the stage. Other members of the Savatteri company 鈥 Davide Maria Incandela, Giulia Tarantino, and Matteo Valentini 鈥 traveled to Montclair on a separate independent program. In the course of the week, they supported the American students in studying the libretto, accompanying them as their alter egos until the performance on stage. The elegant Leshowitz Auditorium of the Cali School of Music was enriched by select projected images of the musical in Agrigento, immersing the audience in the splendor of the temples and the Mediterranean landscape of Agrigento. In the audience, students, teachers, musicians and local residents experienced ancient and, at the same time, surprisingly contemporary theatre.

Marco Savatteri commented: “It has never happened to me that one of my works became part of the training program at a foreign university. Sitting in the audience and seeing “The Reawakening of the Gods” translated into English, masterfully sung by 16 young students, with images of our beloved Valley of the Temples behind us, was like seeing a creature grow and move forward along paths never imagined. The joy of seeing the Italian actors excited in front of their ‘American alter egos’ is indescribable. My most sincere gratitude goes to 精品成人福利在线 University, to Prof. Teresa Fiore, to all the professors, the students, and the Valley of the Temples Park’s director, Mr. Sciarratta, who continues to believe in this musical.鈥

A CULTURAL BRIDGE BETWEEN SICILY AND THE USA

The project was born in 2024 during Marco Savatteri’s visit to the U.S., when Prof. Fiore (Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies in the Italian Program) started a conversation with Prof. Lori McCann听 (Voice) and Prof. Ryan Kasprzak听 (Musical Theatre), two programs of excellence in the College of the Arts, where the internationalization of the curriculum is encouraged.

The objective of the project is to create a two-way exchange: to offer American students an international professional experience in an island rich in history, art, and natural beauty and to promote the Italian language and culture on campus. In the last two years, Savatteri has conducted workshops on immersive theater and “The Reawakening of the Gods,” while some students have participated in internships in Agrigento at Savatteri Produzioni. The Italian part of the project began with the summer 2025 internship of three Opera and Musical students 鈥 Mia Grizzuti, Emma Mason and Brianna Coppolino 鈥 who lived for two months in Agrigento spending their time in rehearsals, performances and tours of the area.

THE ENGLISH LIBRETTO

Brianna talking about translation

The idea of 鈥嬧媡ranslating the libretto into English was born in connection with Brianna Coppolino’s internship and carried out as part of a translation course she took with Prof. Marisa Trubiano (Italian Program) in the Fall 2025. “I have Italian origin on my father’s side, but my family did not pass the language. Studying Italian for me has been a way to fill that gap, and this translation a way to connect the rhythm of poetry and music in one work,” Brianna explained.听

Prof. Fiore added: “The translation of the libretto embodies the spirit of the project: a bridge between languages, forms of knowledge, places and human experiences. For the Italian Program, supported by the Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies, the broader international and interdisciplinary project reflects our mission of academic, cultural and social training across borders.Taking students to lesser beaten paths in Italy, in some cases to the areas their ancestors came from, makes their experience even more unique: Sicily is a crossroads of civilization and regardless of one’s ethnic origin, the island quickly becomes home for visitors from all walks of life. Within this ground-breaking intercollege collaboration, my colleagues Lori McCann, Ryan Kasprzak and I in are profoundly indebted to Mr. Inserra for making this special program possible.”

Besides an insightful exchange with the translator on stage, the performance was followed by a conversation with Mia Grizzuti, 2025 intern, who described the unique characteristics of performing in the musical in an archeological site and the transformative experience of being part of a different, yet familiar, culture for two months. And a few days before the performance Marco Savatteri, Prof. Fiore and Prof. McCann were interviewed about the project on 精品成人福利在线 University’s WMSC FM 90.3 radio, as part of an original program presented in an Italian caf茅, Caff猫 Classico ().

FUTURE HORIZONS

After the success of the reading, the project now focuses on the 2026 edition internship with Tishaun Turner and Lorenzo Hilliard as interns, within a collaboration with Nexo Sicilia on logistics. Future prospects include an international production of “The Reawakening of the Gods,” in partnership with 精品成人福利在线 University, the Valley of the Temples Park and Savatteri Produzioni, combining classical tradition and contemporary innovation. A collaboration with the Center for Holistic Integration of the NYC College of Technology (City University of New York) for an immersive staging of the Temples abroad would bring visibility to the UNESCO site thanks to sophisticated visual projection, thus bringing the ancient myths into the present in ever new and modern forms.

This multi-part project entails an inter-college and international collaboration between 精品成人福利在线 University (Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies, Musical Theatre Program, the Cali School of Music) and , a musical theater company based in Italy. The related internship involves the听Office of International Academic Initiatives at 精品成人福利在线 University, Nexo Sicilia for logistical aspects in Agrigento, and the .

Community-based Interview about the Int’l Project The Reawakening of the Gods /inserra-chair/2026/04/06/community-based-interview-about-the-intl-project-the-reawakening-of-the-gods/ /inserra-chair/2026/04/06/community-based-interview-about-the-intl-project-the-reawakening-of-the-gods/#respond Mon, 06 Apr 2026 09:15:22 +0000 /inserra-chair/?p=221245 The Italian musical The Reawakening of the Gods, presented as a Public Reading at 精品成人福利在线 University this past month, is at the core of a broader international intercollege initiative illustrated in the course of a March 20 interview on the radio program titled “Coffee with Montclair.鈥

Given the goal of this original radio program, which literally brings our students and equipment to the nearby community to connect with local listeners and boost MSU engagement off campus, WMSC chose an Italian spot, in Pompton, NJ. The interviewer, Allen Macaraeg, addressed questions to Prof. Teresa Fiore (Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies, Italian program, CHSS), Prof. Lori McCaan (Voice Program Cali School, CART) and our special guest from Agrigento, in the region of Sicily, composer and director , to explore the different aspects of this exciting multi-phase initiative.

In the course of a lively exchange with Allen, Fiore explained the history of the project, born from Savatteri鈥檚 first visit on campus in Nov. 2024, and unfolding through three workshops with our students, a two-month summer internship in Sicily for three Opera and Musical Theatre students in 2025, and the March 27, 2026 Public Reading bringing together members of the Savatteri company and MSU students. McCann, also on behalf of Prof. Ryan Kasprzak (Musical Theatre, CART) highlighted the importance of the internationalization of the curriculum for 精品成人福利在线 students in the Performing Arts, especially those in Opera and Musical Theatre: Italian constitutes a key language for their training and career opportunities.

Savatteri commented on the ancient and yet incredibly contemporary content of a musical that carries the timeless lessons of classical mythology. Precisely because of this eternal quality, Savatteri was excited to bring the musical from the UNESCO World Heritage site The Valley of the Temples of Agrigento – where the show is presented in front of the 5th-century BC Tempio della Concordia – to the United States and have it speak English, thanks to the translation of the 2025 intern and Opera student, Brianna Coppolino. Her precise and poetic version was completed under the supervision of Prof. Trubiano (Italian program) and encapsulates the type of translation of knowledge, talent, experience, languages and cultures that the overall initiative activates in three departments (Musical Theatre, Voice at the Cali School of Music, and Italian), two colleges (CART and CHSS), two kind of entities (public university and private company ) and effectively locations in two continents, Montclair (USA) and Agrigento (Italy).

Blending excerpts from audiovisual archival material, literary sources, and original video-interviews with direct witnesses of the 1943 Allied Landing in Sicily, the presentation read a largely forgotten pivotal historical event of WWII through the lens of foodways. In Fiore’s approach, as a memory and narrative device, food allows for an alternate history of the liberation campaign through complicating both the myth of the Land of Abundance incarnated by the U.S. military forces and the image of a destitute Sicily that the Americans embraced.

Organized by the local museum Nunzio Bruno, devoted to traditional craftsmanship, whose mission is to engage the town’s residents as part of collaborations with several associations, the talk included a presentation by Giuseppe Caramma, a historian affiliated with the University of Catania, and Daniele Valvo, an engineer-turned-WWII-guide whose approach with the audience is interactive. Particularly effective was Valvo’s guessing game about vintage photos of the Allied soldiers’ arrival to Sicily, where the participants had to identify locations and people depicted in the images.

Floridia hall audience

Dr. Fiore shared information about the condition of Italian Americans at the time of Pearl Harbor and described their paradoxical experience of being at once “enemy aliens” in 1942 and supporters of the military efforts with the drafting of large numbers of soldiers of Italian descent, while also being concerned about the fate of their relatives back in the country of origin, since Italy was an enemy up to the Landing. Dr. Fiore also illustrated how the 82nd anniversary of the Landing was celebrated in Licata as part of the programs of Agrigento Capital of Culture 2025. Since the main topic of the evening was indeed the cultural value of the memory of the Landing as part of public history projects, she provided a model that embraces a multi-disciplinary approach in line with the mission of and its Italian chapter, (see SBARCO).

Dr. Fiore Presents Her Sabbatical Project at UNISG in Piedmont, Italy /inserra-chair/2025/10/16/dr-fiore-presents-her-sabbatical-project-at-unisg-in-piedmont-italy/ /inserra-chair/2025/10/16/dr-fiore-presents-her-sabbatical-project-at-unisg-in-piedmont-italy/#respond Thu, 16 Oct 2025 21:59:14 +0000 /inserra-chair/?p=220327 Dr. Teresa Fiore gave a talk titled “The Taste of the Landing; Food and the American Myth at the Time of Operation Husky” at UNISG (Universit脿 delle Scienze Gastronomiche) in Pollenzo (Piedmont, Italy) on Oct. 14.

Based on her sabbatical research on foodways at the time of the Allied Landing in Sicily (1943), the paper revises the narrative of the American forces feeding Sicilians through the use of eighteen interviews with direct witnesses and scholars sharing stories about the stark contrast between the local wartime food and the industrial food brought by the soldiers from the US. See webpage.

Prof. Cinotto introduced Dr. Fiore’s talk providing special insights into the impact of the landing in Italy in terms of U.S. control of the economic and socio-political sphere.听The students鈥 questions during the Q&A revealed a keen interest in historical issues, in methodological aspects linked to oral history, and in the encounter of cultures during wartime.

UNISG has an institutional commitment to videos about food. Its film archive directed by Dr. Gabriele Proglio, is devoted to oral history about food, food history, food practices, etc.

UNISG is a private university linked to Slow Food, the movement founded by Carlo Petrini in 1986. Focused on food and sustainability, the academic approach privileges collaborative hands-on projects ranging from cooking, cook-book writing, market visits, food history research, eco-agronomy techniques, etc.

The UNISG campus is a World-Heritage (UNESCO) site with its distinctive historical buildings, imposing towers, elegant courtyards, printing office for student-managed publications, student-tended fruit and vegetable gardens, and a unique cafeteria that largely relies on the produce cultivated on campus. All under the watchful eye of the snail, the Slow Food symbol, under no time pressure.

️鈥淭his program has changed us as artists, students, and people: adaptability, cultural and linguistic enrichment, challenges and creative answers, as well as the pleasure of a slow pace of life in Agrigento, are part of this extraordinary experience 鈥 stated the three students, visibly moved. “Performing in front of the Temple of Concordia with our voices echoing through the columns dating back to the 5th century BCE was an exhilarating feeling.鈥 This emotional and professional journey reached its most intense expression when Mia and Brianna were assigned the solo part at the end of two separate show, and beautifully interpreted the role of Fate.

鈥淭his program serves as an ideal model of collaboration between academia and the world of musical theater, between faraway places working closely together such as Agrigento and Montclair, between artists who speak different languages and share knowledge, giving voice to a show imbued with ancient yet still very topical stories that explore the relationship between humans and gods. We make joint decisions to lead this program, attending to the affective dimension, and seeing in it a sacred experience: an example of peaceful sharing in a world increasingly permeated by conflicts鈥 – said Prof. Teresa Fiore (Inserra Chair, WLC Dept., CHSS), Professor Lori McCann (Voice, Cali School, CART), and , who have woven together this international summer program along with Ryan Kasprzak (Head of the Musical Theatre Program),听in collaboration with the Office of International Academic Initiatives at 精品成人福利在线 University.

An infinite thank you to Mr. Inserra for his great generosity, to Maestro Savatteri with his tireless genius and sensitivity, to Savatteri Produzioni for the precious logistical support, to the company for the warm welcome, to Ente Parco della Valle dei Templi, and to Agrigento Italian Capital of Culture 2025.
