As they do so, they reflect on how spaces, bodies, things, and feelings shape our mathematical thinking and enliven our understandings. It’s a curious playground, for sure.

At a pivotal moment in their inquiry, they recently joined renowned NYC subway dancer, Ikeem Jones (), on the E-train where he gave them all kinds of choreo-mathematical things to think about. And be in awe of. Check him out. In the first video, he’s doing what he does. In the second one, he’s enacting his interpretation of the 4-petal graph of r = sin 2θ.

The panelists – Christa Mawn, Gabriella Migliore, and Denis Cook – are experienced professionals in K-12 mathematics education who shared valuable insights about teaching, the job search process, supporting students, and finding balance in the profession. The students taking the math methods course led the conversation with thoughtful questions, making for a lively and inspiring exchange. Many thanks to our panelists for their time, expertise, and encouragement.

The photo captures our panelists together with several students from the class. Thank you, panelists, for your willingness to serve!

The discussion was led by MATH 470/MATH 519 students as they asked Panel members about what it’s like to be a math teacher, the interview process, how to best support students, and how to maintain a work/life balance. The entire discussion was so inspirational. A huge thank you goes out to all Panel members.

What a (Field) Trip! /mathematics-education-phd/2023/07/03/what-a-field-trip/ /mathematics-education-phd/2023/07/03/what-a-field-trip/#respond Mon, 03 Jul 2023 15:10:43 +0000 /mathematics-education-phd/?p=207422

What would you say is mathematical about the icosahedron on the right? Likely responses involve quantities, such as the number of faces, the lengths of the edges, or the measures of the angles at each of the vertices.

Now, if you were constrained from providing a response that relies on mathematical quantities, and instead you could only attend to mathematical qualities, what would you say is mathematical about the photograph on the right? This is the essence of the question we were asked to keep in mind throughout the trip and then respond to afterward:

Briefly describe a mathematical experience you had on this adventure that does not rely on quantification or computation. Then share what it enabled you to feel, appreciate, or think about.

What kind of qualitative mathematical experience do you imagine the woman in this photograph might be having? What would that experience enable her to feel, appreciate, or think about?

What kind of math field trip would be framed by such a question? The kind that hopes to move us outside of conventional ways of thinking about what mathematics is, and into a space where we’ll only be able to come up with an answer by reflecting in new ways on just how it is we’re experiencing some mathematical experience. In this news story, we share students’ reflections on their mathematical experiences. These reflections will let us know if our hope was realized.

The partnership includes a team of teachers from MfA, researchers from MSU and the University of Buffalo, and educational professionals from across New York State. Each case study will include a video segment of secondary instruction in real classrooms taught by MfA master teachers and supporting materials (lesson plans, classroom handouts, discussion prompts), representing a set of tools for teachers to use in professional learning communities focused on secondary mathematics teaching and learning. The team includes full-time doctoral students Matthew Wright and Victoria Bonaccorso. They are being advised by Dr. Eileen Murray.
