Spot a Romance Scam Fast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"366\" data-end=\"449\">Roses are red, violets are blue,<br data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"401\" \/>Someone might fall for scamming\u2014 don\u2019t let it be you.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"451\" data-end=\"725\">As Valentine\u2019s Day rolls around, many people are looking for love \u2014 but so are scammers. <strong data-start=\"540\" data-end=\"557\">Romance scams<\/strong> are on the rise, and college students and staff are not immune. These scams can leave victims not just heartbroken, but also out hundreds or even thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"727\" data-end=\"730\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"732\" data-end=\"761\">How Romance Scams Work<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"763\" data-end=\"804\">Scammers usually start with a message on:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"946\">\n<li data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"848\">\n<p data-start=\"807\" data-end=\"848\">A dating app (like Tinder, Hinge, Bumble)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"849\" data-end=\"895\">\n<p data-start=\"851\" data-end=\"895\">Social media (Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"896\" data-end=\"946\">\n<p data-start=\"898\" data-end=\"946\">Or even through DMs on gaming or study platforms<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"948\" data-end=\"1159\">They\u2019ll build a connection fast \u2014 complimenting you, sharing personal stories, and talking about a \u201cfuture\u201d together. But there\u2019s a catch: you\u2019ll never meet them in person. Eventually, they\u2019ll ask for something.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1161\" data-end=\"1185\"><strong data-start=\"1164\" data-end=\"1185\">Common red flags:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1186\" data-end=\"1515\">\n<li data-start=\"1186\" data-end=\"1256\">\n<p data-start=\"1188\" data-end=\"1256\">They say they\u2019re <strong data-start=\"1205\" data-end=\"1241\">deployed, overseas, or traveling<\/strong> and can\u2019t meet<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1257\" data-end=\"1337\">\n<p data-start=\"1259\" data-end=\"1337\">They claim to have <strong data-start=\"1278\" data-end=\"1294\">an emergency<\/strong> (hospital bill, visa issue, stolen wallet)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1338\" data-end=\"1410\">\n<p data-start=\"1340\" data-end=\"1410\">They ask for <strong data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1410\">gift cards, crypto, wire transfers, or Zelle payments<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1411\" data-end=\"1472\">\n<p data-start=\"1413\" data-end=\"1472\">They want to <strong data-start=\"1426\" data-end=\"1464\">move the conversation off-platform<\/strong> quickly<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1473\" data-end=\"1515\">\n<p data-start=\"1475\" data-end=\"1515\">They love you\u2026 after just a few messages<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"1668\" data-end=\"1671\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1673\" data-end=\"1703\">How to Protect Yourself<\/h2>\n<ol data-start=\"1705\" data-end=\"2291\">\n<li data-start=\"1705\" data-end=\"1820\">\n<p data-start=\"1708\" data-end=\"1820\"><strong data-start=\"1708\" data-end=\"1724\">Take It Slow<\/strong><br data-start=\"1724\" data-end=\"1727\" \/>Real relationships take time.
