He has played key roles in creating interdisciplinary departments, notably serving as Inaugural Department Chairperson and holding the Ron and Carol Endowed Professorship at University of Nebraska at Kearney (UN-K). His extensive career includes leadership positions at the University of Sydney, the University of Hong Kong, and Lund University, as well as a Postdoctoral Fellowship at MIT. Driven by a commitment to addressing critical public health challenges, Dr. Hossain led initiatives in communications and responses to public health preparedness, bio-related threats, and health systems, with a focus on vulnerable populations. He played a crucial role in coordinating COVID-19 Resilience Networks for Pandemic Preparedness & Response, reflecting his dedication to advancing knowledge in healthcare.

I am dedicated to nurturing junior and mid-career faculties, supporting grant-writing workshops, working with administrative colleagues and building interdisciplinary center for educational and research excellence, including leading fundraising campaigns. I am committed to driving diversity, equity and inclusion efforts and promoting complex networks and systems research and education addressing societal, environmental, health, business, engineering and technology-related challenges.

Dr. Liaquat Hossain

Dr. Hossain’s research has secured more than U$20M competitive research grants and created a cross-disciplinary Complex Systems Research Cluster using federal and industry funding. This work supported over 30 doctoral students. His works have been published in over 200 international peer-reviewed research papers in the areas of information and decision sciences, computational sciences, knowledge management, and complex emergencies including public health preparedness.

HawkHack Mini /school-of-computing/2020/11/24/hawkhack-mini/ /school-of-computing/2020/11/24/hawkhack-mini/#respond Tue, 24 Nov 2020 17:00:19 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/computer-science/?p=206239 Participants came from various majors, including Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Accounting, Computational Linguistic, Mathematics, and Biology. Our participants represented various ethnic groups, including Black or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and Asian/Pacific Islanders.

The whole event included several high-quality workshops. A “Finding Your Project Ideas” workshop was given to help participants come up with the ideas they want to work on. A “Git and GitHub for HawkHack” workshop introduced the essential聽tools and workflows that the participants need to successfully submit their projects. A “Personal Website” technical workshop was given for participants who are interested in building their own websites. A “Zen and Programming in Go” workshop was given by Mr. Lee Painton, who is an MSU alumnus currently working at Google. The participants spoke highly of these workshops. “We learned a lot from these workshops.” “The workshops helped us find our project ideas and implement them.”

Dr. Dawei Li and Dr. Jiacheng Shang from the Department of Computer Science, and Mr. Lee Painton served as the judges for the submitted projects. Two projects are worth mentioning. One team designed a system to address an important issue in real life: harassment聽in the public space. As an anti-harassment effort, many restaurants and other public places encourage victims to report the harassment directly. However, in a public space, the harassment report may be known by other people and then be exploited by other people to harm the victims again. The team designed a system called SafeCode, that lets customers and the restaurant owners agree on a set of randomized codes to represent specific harassment types. In this way, victims can safely send harassment reports, and don’t need to be worried about being further harassed due to the harassment report.

Another team built an intelligent file management tool for the Windows operating system. Nowadays, people need to manage a lot of files on their PCs. Sometimes, we want the repetitive tasks to be automated. The team took on this motivation and built such a tool using an existing聽free and open-source desktop customization utility for Windows. The tool built by the team can sort files within a given directory, group files that have the same extension into the same folder. Many other features are also identified, and they aspire to implement the features in the future. The team was very excited that they built something quite useful during a short amount of time, and also had a lot of fun.

The successful conclusion of this event demonstrated CSAM’s and the University’s uncompromised dedication to student success even during the pandemic.

The end result of a $22.2 million renovation and expansion of the former Mallory Hall, the 43,800-square-foot Center for Computing and Information Science is the latest new science facility at 精品成人福利在线 following the opening of the Center for Environmental and Life Sciences in 2015. The new facility houses the Department of Computer Science, as well as the College of Science and Mathematics Student Success Center, Mathematics Education group, Health Careers, and Upward Bound programs.

The grand opening celebration featured words of welcome from President Susan A. Cole, and remarks from College of Science and Mathematics Dean Lora Billings, Department of Computer Science Chair Constantine Coutras and graduate student Tori Zirul, who is in the master鈥檚 program in Molecular Biology working toward applying to doctoral programs in virology.

A special keynote address, 鈥淟eading Science and Technology in the Face of Digital Everything,鈥 was delivered by College of Science and Mathematics alumnus Anthony J. Scriffignano 鈥82, 鈥85 MA, PhD, senior vice president and chief data scientist at Dun & Bradstreet.

鈥淭he world is changing at a rate that has never been experienced by the human race before,鈥 said Scriffignano emphasizing that what we do with new technology matters more than the technology itself. 鈥淚t鈥檚 critical that we come together, that we work across disciplines, that we think about the problems that we鈥檙e trying to solve, not leading with the technology, but leading with the opportunity.鈥

Following the speakers and the ceremonial ribbon cutting, guests were treated to tours of the cutting-edge facility. The Center features a 145-seat amphitheater, six smart teaching labs and classrooms, a specialized computer hardware lab and nine research labs, along with lounge and study areas. A special feature is the second-floor skyway connecting the Center to neighboring Schmitt Hall, which has been expanded into a high-tech area, where students can gather to create the next generation of software, apps for mobile devices, games, clouds and cyber-physical systems.

鈥淭hese common areas in the Center are essential for creativity and collaboration,鈥 notes Billings. 鈥淭hey encourage increased communication within and across different disciplines, inspiring new research directions.鈥

With classroom technology provided by the University鈥檚 strategic technology partner Sony Electronics, the Center features active learning solutions and state-of-the-art professional equipment such as laser projectors; 55- and 85-inch displays; robotic pan/tilt/zoom cameras in collaborative spaces; and wireless microphone systems throughout.

The Center鈥檚 significantly expanded research spaces, including two research labs on the third floor and five research labs on the new fourth floor, will allow the Department of Computer Science to offer new graduate degree programs 鈥 including an MS in Cybersecurity and an MS in Data Science.
