The Boss has spoken and the argument over the lyrics of 鈥淭hunder Road鈥 has finally been put to rest 鈥 in an 鈥渋ncredibly relatable鈥 way, says 精品成人福利在线 University鈥檚 Springsteen scholar, Classics and General Humanities Professor .
Appearing November 14 on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Bruce Springsteen clarified a longtime internet debate about the opening line in his classic 1975 song: 鈥淭he screen door slams / Mary鈥檚 dress sways鈥 versus 鈥淭he screen door slams / Mary鈥檚 dress waves.鈥
鈥淭his record is almost 50 years old. Fifty years ago, I was a sociopath,鈥 joked to Fallon. 鈥 I was insane about every single detail that had anything to do with music, my album, my album cover, my lyrics. I went over everything with a fine-tooth comb so everything would be perfect and completely accurate. The lyrics to 鈥楾hunder Road鈥 are in this album. The correct lyrics.鈥
Springsteen says he鈥檚 been 鈥渟inging 鈥榮ways鈥 all these years. But reading from the album, he discovers the error: 鈥淭he screen door slams / Mary鈥檚 dress waves.鈥
鈥淭his is wrong,鈥 he says, laughing. 鈥淭his is wrong. I鈥檓 telling you this is wrong. How did that happen?鈥
Montclair鈥檚 Springsteen scholar says she saw the clip 鈥 and totally understands the explanation.聽 鈥淎s someone who has written books and articles, I found it incredibly relatable,鈥 Jones says. 鈥淲ho hasn鈥檛 looked at the final published version of their work and seen an error or typo that got past all the editing and proofreading?鈥
Jones specializes in Latin poetry and has also contributed to the scholarly research on the New Jersey rocker, interpreting American pop culture and how Bruce Springsteen鈥檚 work reflects the American experience in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. She teaches a summer course, Selected Topics: Bruce Springsteen.
鈥淚鈥檓 glad to have an answer from the man himself to something that I鈥檝e wondered about 鈥 the handwritten lyrics in his notebooks have 鈥榮ways鈥 and the lyric sounds to my ear like 鈥榮ways,鈥 but 鈥榳aves鈥 in the printed lyrics of the song鈥檚 first official release made me doubt 鈥榮ways.鈥欌
鈥淭urns out there was a simple explanation.鈥
