The class worked on the 鈥渂efore the lesson assessment task鈥 prior to the lesson. Students spent a class and a half on the whole-class discussion with sample student responses and the collaborative small-group work. The sample response for 鈥淎ga鈥 was modified to reflect a strategy students learned in class nicknamed 鈥渢he upside down birthday cake鈥 which uses the area model to determine either the GCF or LCM of a pair of numbers.
