French Tutoring

Mondays 2-3pm and Tuesdays 3-5pm via Zoom. Don’t worry if you get a “waiting room” message: the tutor is likely with another student.

Wednesdays in Schmitt 241R [note the change of room!]: 12:30-1:15 in person

Conversation Hour

Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30 in the Schmitt 2nd floor atrium. Generally with snacks! Our first meeting will be Wednesday, September 7th.

Translation

Try your hand at translating a poem (from French into English, Spanish or Haitian Kreyòl) or recording a reading at our “ repository!

Free French Books!

Check out the “little library” of free French books in the second floor atrium of Schmitt. Feel free to take books home, to share with friends, or to add your own materials.

Upcoming Events

9 November, 2pm. Multilingual Writers: Common Errors, Zoom.

Whether you’re in the process of learning English or if English is not your native tongue, there are common writing errors that you will find in your writing. This workshop reviews the grammar rules for some of the most common errors made by multilingual writers. Join us to review strategies for catching preposition usage mistakes and more.

16 November, 1:30pm, TAPIF Info Session, Zoom.

Ever wondered about living in France after graduation? Come to an informal Zoom session to hear about the experiences of recent grads who have done just that! Whether they have taught in the TAPIF program or found a way to work overseas, come hear strategies for success! TAPIF applications are due in January 2023, but there is an Early Bird Deadline this month! More info.

Join our Zoom and hear from students who have participated in the program – about the application process, what it’s like to live and work in France, or any other questions you might have!

19 November, 10 am – Join us on a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. We will be visiting the exhibit, as well as the nearby Albertine bookshop (the only bookshop in New York solely dedicated to French and English books). Bring a snack or grab something with us at the Met cafe. Entrance to the Met Museum is free for NJ students with ID. We will take off from the DeCamp bus stop at the corner of Valley Rd and Nassau Rd near campus at 10:20am, or if you have other means of transportation you can meet us at the museum at 11:30am. RSVP at this.

28 November, 5:30pm, Zoom – “Littérature-philosophie, aller retour via Samuel Beckett et Nathalie Sarraute”

Lecture to be given in French; Q & A and all discussion to be in French and English. Bruno Clément est Professeur émérite à l’Université Paris 8 – dans un département de littérature où son enseignement a souvent porté sur les textes philosophiques. Il a présidé le Collège international de philosophie de 2004 à 2007 et il a été de 2011 à 2016 membre senior de l’Institut universitaire de France. D’abord spécialiste de Beckett, il s’intéresse aux liens entre littérature et philosophie. Il a notamment publié: L’œuvre sans qualités, rhétorique de Samuel Beckett (1994, et plus récemment en 2018 un Beckett aux Presses Universitaires de Vincennes), Le lecteur et son modèle (1999), L’invention du commentaire: Augustin, Jacques Derrida (2000), Le récit de la méthode (2005), La voix verticale (2013 ; trad. en japonais 2017)), Henri Bergson, prix Nobel de philosophie (2021 ; trad. en cours en chinois et en anglais).

5 October. French Film Night! Come celebrate the work of French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard (1930-2022). We will watch his “À Bout De Souffle” together, in French with English subtitles. Learn about Godard’s contribution to the era of ‘La Nouvelle Vague’! 5:30pm, Schmitt 104.

27 October, Zoom, 3:30pm. “Become a World Language Educator and Change the World.” Discussion for all World Language students with Dr. Kristina Nicosia, Superintendent of Highland Park Schools (NJ). Register in advance for this meeting at:

2 November, 2pm, MLA Style: 9th Edition Overview, Zoom.

This overview will help familiarize you with MLA citations—an important part of academic writing in areas of the humanities such as English, Foreign Language and Literatures, Literary Criticism, and Cultural Studies. We will also review updates included in the 9th edition. Bring your Works Cited pages and questions for extra help.
