The campus may be quiet, but cybercriminals are wide awake.

Whether you’re heading home, traveling, or catching up on sleep and streaming, cybersecurity should still be on your holiday checklist. Scammers and hackers love the holiday season 鈥 because people let their guard down, shop more online, and spend extra time on social media.

Here鈥檚 how to stay cyber safe while you relax:

Traveling? Secure Your Devices

  • Update your phone, tablet, and laptop before you go 鈥 updates fix known security holes.

  • Use a passcode or biometric lock (Face ID, fingerprint) on all devices.

  • Don鈥檛 leave devices unattended in airports, hotels, or common areas.

Online Shopping? Watch for Scams

  • Only shop from trusted, official websites 鈥 if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

  • Don鈥檛 click on promo codes or giveaways sent via random texts, DMs, or emails.

  • Use credit cards or trusted services like PayPal 鈥 avoid direct bank transfers.

  • Ignore fake delivery texts or emails asking you to 鈥渧erify鈥 shipping info.

Getting Messages from 鈥淪upport,鈥 鈥淎mazon,鈥 or 鈥淵our Bank鈥?

  • Be suspicious of urgent messages asking for gift cards, passwords, or logins.

  • Don鈥檛 click links in unexpected emails or texts 鈥 go directly to the site instead.

  • Never share Duo or 2FA codes 鈥 legit companies or schools will never ask for them.

Think Before You Post

  • Don’t post your travel plans. Anyone can be watching.

  • Avoid sharing boarding passes, hotel info, or real-time location in your stories.

  • Set social media to private or restrict who can view holiday posts.

  • Avoid adding your location to posts.

Ring in the New Year Without a Security Hangover

  • Start fresh by updating old passwords 鈥 especially if you reuse them.

  • Enable 2FA (two-factor authentication) on all key accounts (email, banking, social media).

  • Delete unused apps that may have outdated or vulnerable permissions.

Cyber threats don鈥檛 take a vacation 鈥 but your stress level can.
With a few easy steps, you can enjoy a safer, smoother break and return to campus without surprises.
