MONTCLAIR BOOK ESSAY CONTEST 2014听
The Devil’s Highway听
ESSAY PROMPT
In May 2001, a group of 26 men attempted to cross the border into the desert of southern Arizona, through the deadliest region of the continent, a place called the Devil鈥檚 Highway.听听They were led by a 鈥渃oyote鈥 who abandoned them.听听Only 12 survived.听听Luis Alberto Urrea explores the politics and policies that can lead to such tragedy, including the personal and social costs of illegal immigration. But at its heart, The Devil鈥檚 Highway is the story of a journey in the hopes of starting a better or different life.听听The book also presents the metaphor of invisible borders.
Consider these questions as you write an essay about crossing borders in your own or your family鈥檚 life.听听What borders, real or metaphorical, have you crossed?听听How have they challenged you?听听What aspects of The Devil鈥檚 Highway connect to your experience with crossing borders, visible or invisible?听听How do borders separate people?听听How can we bridge them?听听What meaning does your story have for others?
