This program is an occasion for exploring the relationship between Luchino Visconti鈥檚 operatic 1960鈥檚 film聽Rocco and His Brothers聽and Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten鈥檚 intensely physical choreography for the dance performance聽ROCCO, which takes both thematic and aesthetic inspiration from the film. Introduced by Jed Wheeler (ACP/Kasser Theatre) and moderated by Dr. Teresa Fiore (Inserra Chair), the conversation with the two award-winning artists as well as Dereck Cayla,聽Edward Lloyd, Quentin Dehaye, and Arnaud Macquet聽(ICKamsterdam dancers), will revolve around such questions as:
- What is the relevance of a film about post-WWII industrialization and urbanization and its effects on an impoverished family for a dance choreography created in 2012?
- How is the language of film translated into the language of dance to convey the psychological tension between two brothers boxing in life and in the ring?
Select scenes from the film will be screened during the conversation and dancers will perform parts of the choreography in order to illustrate how to 鈥渄ance a film.鈥
